Szilárd Mezei Wind Quartet - Innen

François Couture, Monsieur Délire's Listening Diary

A second CD for this unusual project from Serbian violist Szilárd Mezei: a quasi-wind quartet consisting of sax/clarinet, trombone, tuba, and viola. As on their debut CD (on Leo Records), Mezei’s compositions fall here more tward traditional folk music, though rooted in chamber jazz with a hefty dose of free improvisation thrown in. Yes, it’s a heady mix of influences, and it works out fine, although the CD runs a bit long and lacks a melody as a moving as “Milos” was on We Were Watching the Rain.

We Were Watching the Rain.
