Sylvaine Hélary - Glowing Life

Guillaume Malvoisin, PointBreak

Modestement parfait.

Below the surface, shimmers. Sparkling waters, emotions, egos. All contained, without modesty, in Vies Scintillantes, a Frenchy alter ego-title of the name of this combo led by Sylvaine Hélary. Accustomed to experimentation as to solid frames, the flautist is here on a adjusted field. Antonin Rayon, Benjamin Gilbert, Christophe Lavergne are some kind of deluxe back-up. This mini-list is enough to evoke the pedigree at play within this quartet. Each person’s research is poured into the commonplace and Glowing Life rustles and sounds with a fascinating class, an abounding freedom. Hélary sticks her own words to those borrowed from the library of PJ Harvey and Eric Vuillard, Lavergne propels each projection with delicacy and conviction. The result is that music that takes some time for voluptuousness and jostling. For a thickened body too, in the turmoil created by Glibert and Rayon (Après la pluie, Thinking to Dance). It crosses audacious pop with seditious experimentation, it grafts the most tenuous poem to the most explicit groove. It’s electric with a strong and agitated discipline. The kind of thing you find by taking the measure of what lives under the surface or under your skin. Simply awesome.
