Alexandra Grimal - Andromeda

The French-American Jazz Exchange program allowed French sax player Alexandra Grimal to go to New York where she recorded Andromeda with Todd Neufeld on electric & acoustic guitars, bassist Thomas Morgan, and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. A highly talented line-up that proves to be a perfect fit for her quiet and nuanced compositions. “Cassiopée” and “Andromeda” border on minimalism, to an extent that I thought of Polwechsel while listening to them. That being said, Grimal’s music never get THAT conceptual and cold. A melody – however minimal or stretched-out – always remains. It’s beautiful and fascinating at times, and it’s also bold and new.

Le programme French-American Jazz Exchange a permis à la saxophoniste Alexandra Grimal de se rendre à New York, où elle a pu enregistré Andromeda avec Todd Neufeld aux guitares (acoustique et électrique), le contrebassiste Thomas Morgan et le batteur Tyshawn Sorey (de Fieldwork). Un alignement de grands talents qui convient parfaitement à ses compositions douces et nuancées. “Cassiopée” et “Andromeda” frôlent le minimalisme, au point où, en les écoutant, j’ai parfois pensé à Polwechsel. Cela dit, la musique de Grimal n’est jamais aussi conceptuelle et froide que ça. La mélodie demeure, aussi minimale ou étirée soit-elle. Bref, c’est très beau, voire fascinant par endroits, mais c’est aussi audacieux et nouveau.
